Our ever-popular, pioneering wide drop bar is now available in carbon! Available now in three size options: 43, 46 & 50 cm.
The 43 cm is great for all-day road and light gravel riding and perfectly pair with our Belgie DISC, Belgie ULTRA or any road/all-road bike, plus any smaller gravel bikes. The 46 and 50 cm options are the perfect upgrade for gravel grinding and bikepacking and are ideally fitted to our GXR a.k.a. Kevins, Big Kev, GMX+ or any gravel bike where potential weight reduction and a smoother ride is sought after.
Designed in Melbourne
The original Walmer Bar was designed to service the rigours and demands of rugged gravel and off-road bikepacking. No handlebar on the market was the right width or shape, so we decided to create our own. This new carbon version of the Walmer Bar further improves on the original design and reduces weight whilst balancing stiffness and flex, providing some extra vibration damping in rugged terrain. The Walmer Bar Carbon is an alternative to our original alloy Walmer Bar, where performance is more of a focus, rather than straight-up robustness.
The entire top section of the handlebar, and part of the drops, have been internally reinforced with Kevlar to reduce the risk of crush damage from stem, lever and adventure tusk clamping (see tech specs for torque ratings).
While we’ve maintained the well-proven overall geometry of the bar, including the drop flare and 7˚ back sweep, we’ve made some updates to the ergonomics to improve hand positioning and the transition between the hoods and drops. The top section of the bar now features a subtle oval shape for added comfort and brake hoses and gear cables tuck neatly into the custom-designed routing recess on the underside of the bars. The width of the clamping area has been carefully considered to allow ample room for bags and lighting while still leaving room for your hands on the tops.
Extensive Testing
Before releasing the carbon version of the Walmer Bar, we consulted with experts in Europe, with facilities in Germany and Taiwan, to come up with a test procedure to ensure the bars meet the demands of the type of riding we like to do.
After passing the standard ISO test with flying colours, we went on to run our ramped-up procedure that closely mimics the loads and stresses the handlebar would be subjected to during its lifetime. The handlebars have been tested to the same rigorous standard at our factory as well as a specialist third-party facility dedicated to the testing of bicycle components.
The test procedure can be closely compared to what an XC MTB handlebar would go through, and they are rated for a maximum rider weight of 120kg.
Why Wide Drop Bars?
Changing hand position regularly prevents pressure and tension build-up and helps minimise numbness and blisters. A wider handlebar offers more stability and control, particularly when descending sketchy terrain on a loaded bike. It also gives added leverage when tackling technical climbs.
